Making your own chain earrings is a very fun arts and crafts project. Chain earrings are versatile and homemade ones are a great economical bridal accessory or a gift so the holidays or a birthday. You can also make them just for fun and they are an excellent way to dress up an outfit for a party. Chain pendant earrings are particularly beautiful and you can also really get creative too when you choose your pendants.
What You Need
- wire cutters
- round nosed pliers
- needle nosed pliers
- fine silver chain
- earring hooks
- 3 mm jump rings
- a ruler
If you do not already have a jewelry making kit then you can just buy an expensive one. It is a great investment if you are a crafty person and interested in making more of your own jewelry after this project. This is also a great beginner jewelry making project.
You do not necessarily need to use silver for your earrings. If you would like you can use gold or even copper or another metal or color. You do want each of your components to match though. Make sure that you have chosen fine chain because you do not want your earrings to look bulky or too chunky. If your ears are not pierced you can get clip on “hooks” or you can also get clasps if you would prefer. Choose any small pendants that you like of any theme. You may also use beads or gemstones. You will need 3 pendants for each earring and you can mix and match.
Step 1: Cut Your Chain
It is important that your measurements for your wire are accurate. You will need 2 pieces that are 7 cm each, 2 pieces that are 8 cm each and then 2 pieces that are 9 cm each. Lay your wire next to your ruler then use your wire cutters to pick it up so that you can carefully and accurately cut it. This is easier than trying to cut it with it laying on your work surface.
Step 2: Attach Your Pendants
Use your round nosed pliers to pick up a jump ring. Hold the ring and then use your needle nosed pliers to open up the ring for each piece of chain to attach your pendants. Attach a pendant to each chain and remember that for the second earring you will want to attach the same pendants for each. Only open the rings as much as you need to get them on and then close them back up.
Step 3: Attach Chains To Earring Hook
Your earring hooks or clasps may or may not need a jump ring. They might have a suitable ring that you will just need to open up. If not then use another jump ring and attach all three chains to it and then attach them to the hook. Repeat this process for the second earring then you are done and have a brand new pair of homemade earrings.
